Unmute sound in XFCE/pulseaudio

My daughter sat at the computer and mashed the keyboard for a few seconds. After that, sound no longer worked.

The issue had to do with XFCE and pulseaudio. After about a half hour of googling and trying various things, this solution worked:

$ amixer -q -D pulse sset Master toggle
