Enable LTE on Nexus 4
The Nexus 4 can connect to most LTE networks in Canada.
To enable this, open the phone application (as if you were to dial a number) and enter *#*#4636#*#*. The Testing screen should appear. Choose "Phone Information".
Scroll down until you see the option Select preferred network type, which should have "WCDMA Preffered" selected. Change this value to "LTE/GSM auto (PRL). Hit the back button to exit the Testing screen.
Go into your Phone's settings. Under "Wireless and Networks", choose "Mobile Networks" (or "More" if you don't see that option, which should enable the Mobile Networks option). From there, choose "Access Point Names".
Select the three dots in the bottom right and select "New APN". Give this new APN whatever name you desire- ex. LTE- and under APN, enter the correct APN LTE string for your carrier. For Rogers/Fido, this is ltemobile.apn. After creating it, long press the new APN to change some of the advanced settings. To enable MMS messaging on Fido, be sure to set the following:
MMSC: http://mms.fido.ca MMS Proxy: 205.151.11.13 MMS Port: 80 MMC: 302 MNC: 370 APN Type: default, supl, mms
Once the new APN has been added, touch the radio option (blue dot) to set it.
Disable Wifi if it's enabled. You should see your mobile network at the top with the symbol 4G. Head to the Google Play store and download the free speed test app if you'd like to see what kind of download and upload speeds you can now enjoy on your Nexus.
Next time you reboot your phone, it will revert back to 3G. This is just a default and an inevitable consequence of 4G not being supported out of the box. There is a method to permanently convert the phone to 4G, but this method involves wiping your phone, which is a whole lot of no need for most people.
Instead, I recommend using a few quick and dirty apps to get the job done after a reboot. The first is "LTE OnOff". This is about as basic an app can get, since all it does is open up the menu that appears when you enter *#*#4636#*#* into your phone's keypad. But a shortcut to it will allow you to get there and change "WCDMA preferred" to "LTE/GSM auto (PRL)" with one tap.
The second is an app called "4g Toggle". All this does is, in similar fashion, create a quick way to get at the APN management menu, allowing you to switch between the 3G and 4G APN's with a single tap.
