Is Gentoo right for me?

Gentoo is an elitist operating system. Period.

Before I recommend Gentoo to anyone, I'd suggest these as the necessary and sufficient conditions:

  • You have built at least one computer from bare-bones hardware components.
  • You have installed, and are comfortable with, any modern version of Microsoft Windows.
  • You know at least one programming language, and are familiar with logical programming constructs.
  • You have a naturally curious and inquisitive mind and you enjoy the concept of continuously learning.
  • You aren't someone who needs instant gratification; you're willing to spend the time to learn how things work before using them.

Your first Gentoo Linux install will probably take between 8 to 12 hours, depending on your experience and skill. During this time, you won't be using the mouse. Most people can't afford to be without a computer for this long, so I recommend all first timers to start the same way I did: keep your existing operating system and install a virtualization infrastructure that you can use as a playground. This will allow you to experiment in your spare time without any sort of significant commitment. If you find Gentoo as appealing as I do, you'll soon find yourself using your virtual machine more than your desktop. When this happens, you know you'll be ready to make the transition.

One of the most rewarding things about using Gentoo, and Linux in general, is the freedom. Imagine the peace of mind knowing that every piece of software installed on your computer is free to use and not stolen or pirated. Freedom from viruses, trojans, malware, adware, browser hijackers, and other threats. Freedom from depending on someone else for your computer's security. Freedom from having to purchase software. And most importantly, freedom from big corporations like Microsoft and Apple. Gone will be the days of not being able to use a competitor's product, such as Adobe Flash, because a greedy CEO like Steve Jobs wants to extract every last nickel from you. And likewise, gone will be the days of waiting for your Windows desktop to load for ages and ages wondering what the FUCK is it DOING???

Most importantly, you have to want control over every piece of equipment and system in your environment. Aren't computers fun?
